In many works of literature, students struggle with character differentiation and analysis. There are simply too many people to obtain thoughtful student insight on every single character’s traits and motivations.
<
I ran into this problem recently with The Canterbury Tales, and rather than just choosing the same handful of tales to focus on, I decided to assign a character to each student in class. The student’s job was to research their person, study their appearance and manner of speech in the prologue, read their tale, and then develop a dating profile. This profile must include likes/dislikes, interests, and personality traits.

I have decided to do the same thing in this class, but with a character we’ve read about over the five week term. Choose anyone you’ve read about (I am not picking for you)! Your job is to modernize them, create a dating profile via Tinder, Bumble, FarmersOnly, ChristianMingle, or one of these interesting ones listed here: https://www.collegetimes.com/uncategorized/16-of-the-weirdest-dating-sites-you-didnt-know-existed-132015

You can always make up your own imaginary app as well. We’ll need a picture, likes/dislikes, what they’re looking for, a brief bio, etc. It should be a full page. All of these must be related to what we know about the character based on our readings. In other words, make it modern but also relevant. Be clever. Be funny. This is soooo much better than writing another research paper, but your grade will be dependent on how much effort you provide. If it looks like you spent ten minutes on it, your grade will reflect that.
